When you decide to learn to ride it is important to acknowledge that it is not a sport that you can undertake without tuition.  It is worth visiting several Riding Schools to get a ‘feel’ for the yard.  Don’t be fooled by a flashy yard full of pretty ponies, the beginners horse is often not the most attractive but it’s his temperament that makes him champion! So look for a clean, tidy, fairly organised yard with well maintained stables, manège or fields and the horses and ponies look cared for!  Instructors should be recognised by BHS (British Horse Society) and/or ABRS (The Association of British Riding Schools)

Always remember that horses and ponies are live, unpredictable animals choosing the right instructor and Riding Centre/School at which to learn is imperative.
