You must always wear a hard hat that adheres to current
safety standards and heals. The riding hats are supplied by
most riding schools for beginners but once you think it’s
for you (usually doesn’t take long!) that would be your
first purchase. They need to be fitted properly by experts
and can be in the form of the Riding Hat, now available in
several different designs or the skull helmet. The current
UK standards to look for are PAS015 or BSEN 1384. We have a
wide range or hats and helmets to choose from that all meet
the current British safety standards so come and be fitted
by our experts!
Next would be a sturdy
pair of riding boots. You have two basic options here, the
long or the short which ever you find the most comfortable.
We stock a multitude of different options so I’m sure you
will be able to find the right one for you.
The optional purchase at
this stage of learning to ride would be the Body Protector.
These are foam filled and worn over the top of clothes or
under an outer coat and are designed to protect the back and
the chest area should the rider fall. Injuries cannot be
entirely prevented by wearing a body protector but they can
reduce the severity of any prospective injury. Protectors
may seem stiff and uncomfortable at first but the foam
should mould itself to the rider’s body shape over time to
become more comfortable.
Second Hand Riding Hats and Body Protectors should be
avoided
If these items have been
subject to a fall, drop or kick the protection they offer
can be diminished, you cannot always tell just by looking at
the product, so it is best to buy from new then you know
the history!
Other Clothing
Equestrian clothing is
designed to offer safety and comfort for the rider.
At Barretts Outdoors we
have a wide choice of other riding gear that may be of use
the longer you ride or start to compete. We have a large
selection of jodhpurs, shirts and riding tops, riding coats
that are waterproof or warm, gloves, hats and caps to hide
helmet hair, right down to the horsey socks.
