Climbing Equipment
A Harness
All harnesses on public sale are safe. The more expensive
harnesses are generally more comfortable if you plan on
hanging around for a while and include extra equipment loops
which are not necessary for indoor climbing.
A helmet
A must if climbing outdoors and probably a good idea indoors
too.
Belay device and hms karabiner
These are what the rope go through and allow you to hold
your partner if they fall and lower them off at the end
without giving you rope burn. There are a number of
different types of belay device so speak to an expert about
which is the best for you.
Chalk bag and ball
Climbers use chalk dust to keep their hands dry and provide
maximum grip, also useful for drawing on peoples backs. A
chalk bag is a useful, but not essential addition to a
climbers equipment. Any climbers try to use chalk sparingly
on outdoor walls because it marks the route for later
climbers and can become slippery when wet.
A
Bag
Don’t forget a rucksack to keep your lunch, spare clothes,
keys, camera and everything else in. A 15 or twenty litre
bag should be plenty big enough. Look for something thin
and close fitting to the body and make sure you can wear it
with your harness, if you are outside you may find yourself
having to climb with it on!
